bloodthirsty lovers/grifters
Last Saturday I saw the Bloodthirsty Lovers, who are the latest project by Dave Shouse of the brilliant late 80s/early 90s Memphis band, The Grifters, who were vanguard members of the lo-fi scene. Don't get the lo-fi thing wrong: they were much harder rock than most of their compadres.
Shouse is a first-rank man of rock, channeling everyone from Bowie to Jagger to Neil, and seeing him play again brought back very fine memories of the couple of years when the Grifters ruled my world. Some day we'll do an extended series on them, but for now, I leave you with one of their very best tunes, plus the wonderfully cinematic lead track from the first Bloodthirsty Lovers' first album of a few years ago. I haven't gotten the new one yet. You can buy it here.
History really gave the Grifters a raw deal.

About those Grifters, they were on my mind yesterday if for no other reason than allmusic.com launched its review of their album "Crappin' You Negative" in my face when I visited that site. I think I agree about Shouse but, over time, I feel that history has treated the band The Grifters adequately. For me, they never put all the pieces together on album or live. They were always intent on being both lo-fi and loose, and, although the looseness is part of what made them interesting, it ultimately stifled the quality of the music they made.

I wouldn't argue - especially with a Guided By Voices fan - that the Grifters were among the best of the best, but what I meant by history's treatment is that most people I talk to have never heard of them, or at best have never heard them. When bands like the Archers Of Loaf survive in the indie-rock memory, something is wrong about that to my (admittedly Grifters-lovin') ears. They deserve a hall of fame plaque, if not an exhibit.

That's very true, which is why I was thinking about them the other day. For me, not being from the East Coast, Come is the band that has had that kind of treatment. Their quality:recognition ratio is even higher in my mind, but I'm not sure you could tell that in the North East.

Actually, nobody gives a shit about Come even here in their hometown of Boston, it seems. It's really difficult to find people who see them today as a major force, or a force of any kind (personally, I do ).
Another candidate for a Borrowed Tunes retrospective!
