björk :: drawing restraint 9 (soundtrack)

Björk never fails to innovate, and she gets bolder each time around. She's also left her moorings in dance-derived electronica and drifted off into much more abstract, purely creative, and challenging music. Tricky's girl has become Matthew Barney's, by no coincidence.
This new soundtrack to a film by her sackmate (he of the Cremaster cycle) is easily her most impenetrable work, which probably goes without saying considering the source material. I can't pretend to know much about Barney's films - I do mean to see some Cremaster films some day - but I'm sure they make Lars Von Trier look like Nora Ephron. This film is supposed to concern a Japanese couple who turn into whales, no doubt metaphorically like so many other symbolic cetaceans. That's all I know. Well, here's a quote from the plot summary:
In a harrowing liebestod which is the climax and centerpiece of the film, the Guests, locked in an embrace and breathing through blowhole-like orifices on the back of their necks, take out flensing knives and cut away each other's feet and thighs. The remains of their lower body are revealed to contain traces of whale tails at an early stage of development, suggesting rebirth, physical transformation, and the possibility of new forms.
Sounds cool.
The music is occasionally gripping and otherwise seems to be missing the film that goes along. Much of it uses the plucked and struck brittle bell sounds that have been her trademark since Vespertine; there are also some of the mouth noises that comprised her last album, Medúlla. Japanese culture is featured: there are pieces featuring the sho, a cross between a harmonica and pan pipes, and there is a full Noh piece. I've never heard any Noh; it sounds like gruff opera with woodblocks to me. I think you need the text (which is included in the liner notes, but is essentially metaphysical mumbo-jumbo without the full context). There are only two Björk vocals, if that's what you're looking for.
If Björk lost you with the wild creativity of Medúlla, there's nothing for you here. However, if you like to hear her keep challenging us, this is another step along the way.
2 crucial questions are answered here: 1) what would Will Oldham sound like singing a Björk song, and 2) what would she look like dressed up as a cross between Peter Criss, the Lorax, and an evil fireman clown (in the cover photo)? I suppose I need to see the film to understand it all.
