new ideas in funk: jamie lidell, koushik

Two records have been released this summer which offer new angles on updated funk/soul/hip-hop/breakbeat music. They're both pretty promising.
Regular reader and funk/soul blogger authority London Lee has already covered Jamie Lidell over at #1 Songs In Heaven; I'll give you my take. Lidell has an incredible toolbox: great songwriting instincts, a helluva voice, up-to-the-minute production skills, and an ear for subgenre that allow him to shapeshift across the history of the music, from Stax/Volt to the Apollo Theater to Paisley Park and beyond. His particular trick lies in subtly applying some of the methods of more abstract, cerebral electronica to traditionalist source material. Drumbeats are chopped here and there; the occasional chirp or click skitters across the stereo field. It is on Warp Records, after all.
That said, it's too bad this disc runs out of gas early. I was convinced I had one of the records of the year in my possession through the first few tracks; somewhat abruptly the songs give way to thinner ideas. But, hoo boy, those first few tracks. They're worth the dough. And "When I Come Back Around" belongs on any year-end mix tape.

It's very difficult to describe Koushik Ghosh, a fairly new Stones Throw artist, in a way that makes him sound significantly different from DJ Shadow (much in the same way that it's difficult to describe what separates Jamie Lidell from Prince). "Psychedelic hip-hop" is the lazy term - but there's no rapping, and hip-hop is only part of it. It doesn't do justice to his shoegazey vocals, for one. How about this: Pink Floyd meets Marvin Gaye meets Slowdive meets DJ Shadow himself. That'll have to do.
Koushik will appeal to Four Tet fans (they're doing a joint tour soon) as much as he will to cratediggers. And, really, that's the simple appeal of his stuff. It's not revolutionary, but it's a very nice variation on a theme, a new sum of fine old parts.
Be With is a collection of his 3 EPs from 2001 to date in preparation for his first proper full-length. As such. it's spotty, and it's fairly clear which tracks each EP was built around. One of them is the tune "Be With", which will appear on that forthcoming album. I've also included the lead track from his first EP.
