roots roundup :: dwight yoakam & john hiatt

A couple of old reliables here, and in both cases we have the kind of solid, unexceptional records that guys like this tend to make more often than not. They're good enough to tide you over to the next great one, but you kind of wish you hadn't spent any real time or money on them. Then again, these guys are worth supporting.

dwight yoakam :: blame the vain

Dwight Yoakam's Blame the Vain - a straight harcore country record - is like any of its kind: it can be graded purely on the merits of its songs, given their uniformly competent execution. And there simply ain't enough keepers. Too many ring the usual cliches and changes, and when he steps out of line (the rocker "When I First Came Here") the results are nearly disastrous. The good news for the impatient is that the disc is frontloaded - the first 3 tracks are the best, with great groove, harmony vocals, and guitar licks galore. In the end, though, I don't think this is as good as his last one, the sleeper Population Me.

john hiatt :: master of disaster

This is a decent-enough collection of tunes - the usual mix of driving rockers and soulful country blues - but Jim Dickinson's production is all wrong to my ears. It sounds like a live-in-the-studio affair, as Hiatt often does, but squashed flat and overpowered by the vocals. Hiatt's players deserve more headroom, and we deserve the results. Unfortunately, this sounds demo-quality, but without lo-fi charm; it's really kind of dead and boxy. But there are a few keepers in here that you hope to hear live someday - in both senses of the word.
