borrowed tunes, inspired
If you've read this blog's masthead, you know where the title comes from. Neil Young's influence extends beyond his traditional rock inventions into the contemporary world of blogs, and there's no artist I love more than the man who had the guts to sing about borrowing a tune while committing the very act. Tonight, I had hoped to have my opinion on the new Wolf Parade disc together enough to share with you, but I got stuck watching the DVD of the recording sessions that bore Neil's new disc, Prairie Wind.
As a Neil Young album, Prairie Wind is a few songs short of great, that much is clear. But by making a DVD painstakingly documenting the recording process, with its cameraderie and sense of easy professionalism, he is essentially challenging you to deny him the pleasure of making music according to his own whims. Even more, he's challenging you as a listener and a critic to doubt anyone who has enough talent to feel entirely comfortable in their songs.
Neil Young has always relied on visceral, almost anti-aesthetic conviction to put across his ideas, and those of us who have fallen for him have been stripped of our skepticism. Neil Young is the reason I can put Keane and System of a Down in my car CD changer at the same time. He made a rock opera that was the equivalent of a childrens' pop-up book last time around, and in bringing a high-school quality stage show on tour, he demanded that you either drop your guard or get the fuck out of the shed.
If you are predisposed to give Neil the benefit of the doubt, you might find that the DVD of Prairie Wind makes the album itself difficult to impeach. I hope to get together a level-headed opinion at some point soon.
