marsen jules :: herbstlaub

Here's a stunning entry into the ambient/abstract catalog of 2005. Marsen Jules is the pseudonym used by Germany's Martin Juhls when he's working in this mode; he has another project called krill.minima which I encourage you to check out on your own.
I've said before that it's a fool's errand for me to try to describe this kind of music, so I'll describe the tools. Jules uses mostly sampled moments or bursts of warm, rich sound, combining them into even richer compositions. There isn't much melody, but there is plenty of emotional weight.
The effect, for me, is not unlike William Basinski's The Disintegration Loops without the disintegration. This music might also appeal to fans of post-rock stuff with ambient touches like Flying Saucer Attack or even Sigur Rós.
Juhls is generous with his mp3s - check out the site and navigate to entire albums (excepting the one reviewed here) via the mp3 link. That's also the case with krill.minima)
