Missy Elliott and Kanye West both released excellent new albums this summer, among the best hip-hop - or any pop music - of the year. Unfortunately, we have to lay low here - posting mp3s from either would get B.T. shut down faster than Uncle Ernie at a pajama party. They've also been written about ad nauseam.
They do both go into the top 20. My capsule reviews:
missy elliot :: the cookbook
Ditching Timbaland for a raft of top-drawer producers was a good move. This is Missy's best album simply by virtue of the expanded stylistic pallette. As always, a few crap R&B joints mar the proceedings, and there may be no "Work It" here, but the grab bag of hits keep you on your toes. It's just a ton of fun. Slick Rick rules on "Irresistible Delicious", and the hyper horns 'n' Apache of "We Run This" are just plain sick.
kanye west :: late registration
In a classic case of trying too hard to make a great album, Kanye West falls just a tiny bit short. The productions are 95% brilliant, with Jon Brion's touches of instrumentation adding hints of unexpected magic. West's sped-up soul sample trick was getting a bit tired, so he's smart enough to drop it entirely, instead using straight singing quite a bit. "Gold Digger" sounds like The Neptunes meeting Moby's Play, in a good way (if you can believe that).
What's missing is the joyfully gonzo avalanche of The College Dropout. Kanye's job is hard; not anybody can do it. On this album, you can feel his meticulous laboring, wanting you to know. The good thing is, it mostly doesn't matter.
