Ryan Teague is one of the new breed of modern artists who operates at the intersection of contemporary classical music, electronic experimentation, and ambient texture. One wonders how these pieces qualify as preludes. If one goes back to the origin of the musical form, one understands that a prelude was a kind of improvised warmup emerging from the tendency to play notes before a proper piece began. Indeed, one can hear each of these pieces as emergent rather than declarative, shifting into and out of brief shapes, building expectation without leading anywhere in particular.
With Six Preludes, Ryan Teague joins the ranks of Jóhan Jóhannsson and Max Richter, all leading progenitors of a gorgeous new wave of composed music.
