super furry animals :: love kraft

Some people are crazy about the Super Furry Animals - they're the kind of band that is somewhat self-mythologizing, with consistent cover art, goofy stage stunts (such as riding a tank into one year's Reading festival), and that effective combination of a stylistic consistency with a left-field sense of the unexpected. Their lyrics are a simplistic intrigue, sometimes fiercely political, sometimes goofy peace-and-love symbolism. Plus, they're Welsh and they use it. They have some ardent fans.
Trouble is, they haven't made many great records - I really liked the epic Rings Around The World. The next one, Phantom Power, was good but not as good, and this one isn't as good as that. They seem to be losing their edge, slipping into a rather flat kind of British art-rock-lite. The production is nicely layered with strings and other downy sounds, but often the songs don't provide the match.
Others seem to find this languid, lush, innocuous collection a rich pleasure. This detailed review at MusicOMH.com makes a case for Love Kraft as a near-perfect album. I do think there are a couple of standout tunes. They're the best examples of a record that doesn't stray far from its sound - if you fall in love with these, you might want to investigate further.
