the constantines :: tournament of hearts

I need to keep the post short tonight, but I wish I could do more justice to the Constantines, who occupy a strange place for me: they're a band that I react deeply to but that hasn't yet made a truly great album.
They've come damn close twice in a row. I don't know how to describe this band except to say that they play a kind of thoughtful, conscientious meat-and-potatoes rock. They don't sound much like Fugazi, but they hit me in the same place as Fugazi did when I first heard them. I wanted to turn it up, hear the tense rhythm section, chugging guitar, and soaring choruses, and yet I wanted to dissect every lyric and study every detail.
Bands like this just mean fucking business. In many ways, they're their own worst enemies, and Tournament of Hearts has a plodding moment or two that will keep it off many people's year-end charts. I'll stick them in the middle of the top 20 here when I get around to figuring it out, and then we'll see if they survive the year.
Did Fugazi ever make a truly great album? I mean, 13 Songs, OK, but that was 2 EPs. Maybe the Constantines are doing just fine.

I need to check this record out if it has
any Fugazi vibes it conjures up.
I think Fugazi's 13 songs is their most well known, but "Repeater" was their mastering of that sound. The records that followed had more an arty, deconstructed makeup..."In On The Kill Taker" and "Red Medicine" which in my humble opinion were great and complex on many levels.
But this thread's about the Constantines isn't it? I need to wake up...
