new electronic music :: boards of canada & jason forrest

Two recent electronic discs work opposite sensory effects: soothing and overstimulating.

boards of canada :: the campfire headphase

The Boards are often thought of as the band that made electronic music OK for indie rockers to like (personally, I think Kid A was far more influential in that regard), and now they have made their most accessible record yet, with the occasional guitar, even. A 3-year layoff between discs might have meant a densely crafted work was in the offing, especially given the tense sound of the previous Geogaddi, but instead they've burnished their warm compositions to a point of stark, lulling beauty. This is a gorgeous disc that drifts off into innocuousness in its final third but is thoroughly enchanting most of the way.

jason forrest :: shamelessly exciting

Aptly titled, Shamelessly Exciting is an exhausting pastiche of vaguely (and, in some cases, obviously) familiar 70s rock riffs, samples, and motifs by the collagist Jason Forrest (who has also gone under the deliberately confusing alias Donna Summer). Where previous Forrest offerings have been incomprehensibly hyperactive
, he's steadied his hand and sharpened his focus for this release. There may not be much lasting value, but it's breathless fun to spin a couple of times while you play spot-the-sample. Jason Forrest is often unfairly lumped into the "mashup" category; he's going for a more original kind of art, one that renders its source material much more atomic and unrecognizable than the fortuitous collision of two well-known songs.
