pazz & jop 2005 :: for the first time since the clash . . .
For the first time since the Clash in 1980 and 1981, the greatest rock critics poll of them all (795 voters this year) has a repeat champion. It's Kanye West (and he won the singles poll too). Based on the year-end lists I've seen, I would have picked Sufjan Stevens to take the prize this time around, but I shouldn't have counted out either Mr. West or Ms. Arulpragasam. Debate away . . . I don't have much to say except that the My Morning Jacket record (which is fine, mind you) is going to sound like a silly top 10 pick within 3 years. I'm also quite stunned that Bloc Party sits all the way down at #18. Huge props to The Hold Steady for breaking into the top 10; I had thought them to be more of a niche/cult band.
