borrowed tunes is having a baby

Why so inactive? There's a baby on the way chez Borrowed Tunes. We'll be shut down for the foreseeable future, but we'll return in a few weeks as more of an occasional thing when inspired.

Thoughts on music this year so far:

- Jim Noir's Tower of Love is the best disc I've heard so far. One-man bedroom-recorded psychedelic Beach Boys/Olivia Tremor Control stuff.
- On the beaten path, the new Belle and Sebastian is yet another worthy entry in their catalog. Some new sounds, production styles, and song arrangments - a few unsuccessful - but mostly full of typically great tunes. They were terrific live the other night as well.
- Everything else I've heard - Cat Power, Bob Pollard, Beth Orton - sounds pretty average to me.
- The new Richard Thompson box set is weird. I will cover it in detail at some point, but the overview is that it's 80% solo acoustic performances, mostly live, which you wouldn't know from looking at it. I believe that pretty much everything on it has never been released before, and the quality varies from poor bootleg to pristine. It is a master class in songwriting, acoustic guitar wizardry, and the combination of the two, but it is not a good introduction to Richard Thompson at all. I personally love listening to it, but you really have to know his music very well to get the most out of it.

Yeah, I need to figure out a way to edit my memory and remove the Belle & Seb. track "To be myself completely" from it. It has some catchy piano riffs, but it's an empty, flat mediocrity. Most of the rest of the album is great, though, esp "Funny Little Frog," "Another Sunny Day," and "White Collar Boy."

I just found your site, hope you come back.
I'm dying to read the rest of your Felt story as well as ANY info on Denim and Go-Kart Mozart (where did the name come from!?)

I too was baffled by Index / Break It when I first listened to it.
I managed to purchase a copy (don't ask the cost), played it, and have sealed it off in a nice frame. Never to be played again... for now.
