at long last. it will take a while to digest, but this was well worth the wait. it was almost one year ago where we discussed this with rater (x) at mcsorley's over many lagers.

While I like the idea, most people who love music will have a lot of arguments with who is where on the list. The Beastie Boys for instance, to me anyway, do not belong on any list of artists, and the Velvet Underground in the top ten ?

The Velvet Underground are definitely in the top ten... if you think this whole 'outside of the mainstream' music is valid.

Interesting list and top half is very good but as you get further down it seems to get erratic e.g. DJ Shadow more important than John Lennon and Bjork should be nowhere on anyone's list! (IMHO)

Thanks to those of you who have looked at this list. I wanted to respond to a couple thoughts. At least Jon added IMHO, but comments about The Beastie Boys and Bjork not belonging on this list at all (or any other) are not carefully considering the recent history of music and its contemporary state. None of the comments arguing about an artist's position discuss the dimension on which they have scored, which is really where the argument needs to be made. Jon's point about the list getting more erratic in the second half is, literally, correct. That's the portion where you would see the most change if people submit their own ratings spreadsheets. And we encourage you to do that. Finally, John Lennon. I suspect that if he wasn't in the top 100 at all, nobody would notice. The fact that he bookends the bottom draws attention to him. Keep in mind that he bookends the top as a part of The Beatles, whose work was considered completely separately. John Lennon in total, then, did amazingly well in this list. He's one of only a handful of people that show up twice through multiple groups or a group plus a solo career (John Lydon; Richard Thompson; Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris; Dr. Dre; Gram Parsons; Brian Eno; are there more that I'm forgetting?).
