new broken social scene (said the gramophone)

Said the Gramophone has posted an advance track from the upcoming self-titled Broken Social Scene disc that sounds terrific. Despite their impeccable indie hipster credentials, I haven't fully embraced BSS yet. But this track sounds like some wailing combination of Greg Dulli's Afghan Whigs histrionic vocalization with shambolic Pavement-style scree - is it Pavement the band or the substance that is being name-checked in the title?.

crashing dream :: blogcasts from an old hand

My friend Bill Peregoy started an mp3 blog this summer which is more oriented toward long-form blogcasts (I don't like the brand-specific term "podcast") than commentary, although he provides plenty of that too.

Bill knows what he's doing. He ran Pop Narcotic records in the 90s, featuring releases by Versus and Helium among other greats. He's been as into music as I have for just as long.

Check out Crashing Dream here.

random tunes :: teenage fanclub, engineers

I've been listening to a few new discs lately; many of them just don't seem worth writing about and a couple are still percolating with me. So I went surfing for tunes.

I found another track at music (for robots) from the new Teenage Fanclub disc. This is the third track I've heard, probably the best, but not good enough to get me to bite. But I know there are lots of fans out there, so you're probably glad for the link.

Teenage Fanclub :: Time Stops (mp3) at music (for robots)

In last Tuesday's new releases post I mentioned a UK shoegaze-y record by newcomers Engineers. I don't think this disc is all that special, but some people are raving about it. There's a link to a track from it below.

more mp3 blogs :: #1 songs in heaven; monkeyfilter list

While you wait for more original content here, including a review of the Kathleen Edwards show that I have just seen, why not check out some other great mp3 blogs?

First, the guy who got the Go Kart Mozart challenge question right in the recent Felt post runs a nonpareil soul/funk blog called The Number One Songs In Heaven. When you feel like you've run out of old music to pursue, the unknown artists of the classic soul/funk era can provide endless new paths. Start here.

Second, our good friend over at The Tofu Hut has started a giant and well-categorized list of mp3 blogs at the Monkeyfilter wiki. Surf at your own risk (we will not be responsible for lost jobs, marriages, etc.)

new raveonettes @ mystical beast

The Mystical Beast, an excellent mp3 blog, has stuff from the new Raveonettes record. I found their 2nd disc to be improbably good after a debut that hinged on a lot of style and one good trick (although they were honest about it). If this new offering is another leap forward, I'll be stunned.

I'm not entirely sold on the tracks that Mystical provides (one of which is a cover), but there's definitely a more sophisticated thing going on (and the Luna comparison is right on). Looking forward to hearing it all in May.

ted leo vs. american idol

Music For Robots has posted a Ted Leo acoustic version of a recent Borrowed Tunes Top 40 watch callout: Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" (got the noveau spelling down this time). He also sticks a bit of Yeah Yeah Yeahs action in for whatever reason.

I love Ted Leo.

I really like this song.

However, this is crap. It features none of the good aspects of either component, singer or song.

blog tip :: said the gramophone

One of my current favorite blogs is Said The Gramophone. The team responsible takes a joyful, broad, and inclusive approach. There's some good writing on the LCD Soundsystem over there now, along with a great advance track from Overkkil River that will appeal to fans of Wilco's "At Least That's What You Said" (their comparison, not mine, and perfectly apt).

When I get a links section going, these guys are first.
