What a blustery way for Borrowed Tunes to return: with a declaration of the most important artists in rock and pop history!

All joking aside, there has long been an obsession for Borrowed Tunes and those close to the community: we've been consumed with the question of how to precisely quantify and estimate the ways in which the music we love has come to be. We're obsessive listmakers, and we've outdone ourselves this time.

A close associate of Borrowed Tunes conceived of and stewarded this project. As a real-life social scientist and fellow obsessive music fan, he constructed the rating system and religiously defended its integrity as the two of us debated the finer points. We think we have a result that is solidly constructed and yet offers plenty of room for challenge and debate.

But, hopefully, the project does not end here: we want those of you who are up to the task to add your own ratings to the final tally. There is only one rule: we reserve the right to challenge your ratings in the spirit of scientific peer review. We will not question your aesthetics; we will simply seek to confirm that your choices have been made from a sound basis. Once your choices are admitted, you will become a part of the review group.

Our ultimate goal is to come up with a kind of eternal Pazz and Jop - an expert consensus on the shape that rock and pop have given to themselves.

So, please e-mail us for a ratings form, or for any general questions. And we encourage all of you to debate the list in the comments below.

Why so inactive? There's a baby on the way chez Borrowed Tunes. We'll be shut down for the foreseeable future, but we'll return in a few weeks as more of an occasional thing when inspired.

Thoughts on music this year so far:

- Jim Noir's Tower of Love is the best disc I've heard so far. One-man bedroom-recorded psychedelic Beach Boys/Olivia Tremor Control stuff.
- On the beaten path, the new Belle and Sebastian is yet another worthy entry in their catalog. Some new sounds, production styles, and song arrangments - a few unsuccessful - but mostly full of typically great tunes. They were terrific live the other night as well.
- Everything else I've heard - Cat Power, Bob Pollard, Beth Orton - sounds pretty average to me.
- The new Richard Thompson box set is weird. I will cover it in detail at some point, but the overview is that it's 80% solo acoustic performances, mostly live, which you wouldn't know from looking at it. I believe that pretty much everything on it has never been released before, and the quality varies from poor bootleg to pristine. It is a master class in songwriting, acoustic guitar wizardry, and the combination of the two, but it is not a good introduction to Richard Thompson at all. I personally love listening to it, but you really have to know his music very well to get the most out of it.

As promised, here's the top 20 recap, in as few words as necessary about each entry.

20. Kathleen Edwards :: Back To Me

Kathleen Edwards is the most unassuming, most unpretentious pure musician and music fan on this list. She stands for the simple power of a great song, and for not being afraid to play it loud. If she had lived down the hall from me in college, I would probably have wasted an awful lot of time.

19. Devin Davis :: Lonely People of the World, Unite!

Devin Davis is the best argument going for PC home digital recording of traditional rock: he's made a warm album referring to pretty much all of classic rock history, all by himself, using technology that his forebears would have shunned.

18. Sigur Rós :: Takk

We'll never hear a record as jaw-dropping as Agaetis Byrjun from Sigur Rós, but as a consolidation of that sound, this will do just fine for now.

17. The Frames :: Burn The Maps

A late entry, written about in yesterday's post.

16. Deerhoof :: The Runners Four

Deerhoof is slowly becoming the most admired art-rock band in the US, this decade's minor Sonic Youth, in a way. This was their most approachable album so far (and it took Sonic Youth 4 or 5 platters to get near the sub-mainstream).

15. System of a Down :: Hypnotize

You may be wondering what I thought of the second half of SOAD's 2005 opus, Mezmerize. It was fine, but not as inventive, somewhat repetitive, and really quite unnecessary after Hypnotize. I've resisted the temptation to judge the two albums as a whole (and drop them out of the top 20), because this single disc was a great listen while it stood on its own.

14. Missy Elliott :: The Cookbook

The end of year polls I've seen haven't been kind to this disc - she hasn't been on any major magazine top 10 lists - but I still believe this is Missy's best total accomplishment if not her most groundbreaking work. With several great singles and more consistently enjoyable album tracks, I've continued to spin this all the way through quite a bit.

13. Konono No. 1 :: Congotronics

By the end of the year, this album had become the consensus world music album of the year. The cynics will backlash it for appealing to people who don't normally listen to or know much about African music, but isn't that the point of a great album? It's not like it's westernized in any way. It's simply the most unusual disc that that has captured enough ears to matter this year.

12. Fiery Furnaces :: EP

I have no idea why this disc hasn't turned up in more year-end lists; perhaps it's because most of it was previously released (though not on CD). It is the place to start for the FFs novitiate. The radio drama Rehearsing My Choir cements the Furnaces' place in my tally.

11. Edan :: Beauty and the Beat

This is probably the second-most purely creative piece of music in the top 20. It recalls the astonishment of the first mega-sampled rap collage records . . . Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, etc. A relatively short record that makes up in width what it might lack in length.

10. Sufjan Stevens :: Illinoise

The second in the 50 states series appears to be the overall winner among critics' lists and polls. It's a wonderful record, but I often find that the critical consensus comes one album too late for great artists; Illinois' only flaw to my ears was its close similarity to Greetings from Michigan . Still, if you heard this one first, I can understand you rating it higher. Then go to Michigan, and also don't miss the contemplative detour of Seven Swans.

9. MIA :: Arular

I wondered if Arular would have staying power; turns out it does. It gets a lot of play around my house , and I haven't grown sick of it at all, really. In many ways, it's a perfect pop record, and a great combination of unusual and thoroughly listenable.

8. Bill Fay :: Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

These days, it's rare that I discover an old artist good enough for my Hall Of Fame; this year, Bill Fay received his plaque. Last year's set of demos gave way to this year's reissues of the two original studio albums, but it was the long-belated release of this oddly compelling set of wilder late recordings that sealed the deal (and gave him a place in the top 20, which only allows new releases). Stumbling, knotty, imperfect, and breathtaking.

7. Broken Social Scene :: Broken Social Scene

If I feel like the critics glommed on to Sufjan Stevens an album or two late, I feel like they might have overrated the breakthrough BSS album, You Forgot It In People, and subsequently underrated this gem. It reminds me of learning about indie rock for the first time.

6. Bright Eyes :: I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I don't have the energy to discuss Conor Oberst. This is a complete set of very, very good songs, with at least one modern classic ("Lua").

Surprise, though: I demoted this one place to give LCD Soundsystem the final place in the top 5. By the end of the year, I felt more like LCD would play well 10 years from now.

5. LCD Soundsystem :: LCD Soundsystem

A parade of incredible singles with the aggro-punk of "Movement"; references to Bowie, Prince, Mark E. Smith, and of course Daft Punk. 100% fun with just the right amount of brains.

4. The Hold Steady :: Separation Sunday

Also 100% fun with just the right amount of brains. It is always amazing when an artist pulls off a concept album without having to waste a song or two to keep the story intact.

3. Okkervil River :: Black Sheep Boy

Yes, I like concept albums. Will Sheff's incredible command of imagery and metaphor means that almost no lyric on this record is literal, but all of it congeals, under a grand sense of melody and song structure.

2. Doves :: Some Cities

The Doves own an even grander sense of melody and song structure; while Okkervil River produced perhaps the more complete work of art this year, I'm a sucker for the big cinematic rock production record. This is it.

1. Bloc Party :: Silent Alarm

It's always tough to cut through the hype, and Bloc Party were naturally compared quite a bit to '04 hype victims Franz Ferdinand as the year progressed. That comparison may work ethnomusicologically, but it is of zero value artistically. I'm not going to argue the absolute merits of each band - it's clear which I prefer, and it's my preference only - but I think the distinctions between the bands are almost a set of opposites: eager vs. coy, soaring vs. stalking, political vs. personal, bombastic vs. circumspect.

The secret to Bloc Party is simple to me: it's how the guitars open up from chunk to chime. And 15 great songs. Hopefully they will make a second album great enough to put the hype to rest; for now, it's on to the Arctic Monkeys in 2006.

It's Kanye West (and he won the singles poll too). Based on the year-end lists I've seen, I would have picked Sufjan Stevens to take the prize this time around, but I shouldn't have counted out either Mr. West or Ms. Arulpragasam. Debate away . . . I don't have much to say except that the My Morning Jacket record (which is fine, mind you) is going to sound like a silly top 10 pick within 3 years. I'm also quite stunned that Bloc Party sits all the way down at #18. Huge props to The Hold Steady for breaking into the top 10; I had thought them to be more of a niche/cult band.

The biggest BT vs. P&J discrepancy? Our #2 Doves vs. their #151.

P.S. Did anyone spend time with those 1980 and 1981 lists? Doesn't the 1980 list read like a consensus hall of fame & 1981 like a "where are they now?" Strange.

At long last, and at least before January is gone, it's time to close out 2005 with final thoughts on a few discs I haven't covered. Tomorrow I'll post my summary comments on the actual top 20. Otherwise, as I set fingertips to keyboard, I have very little plan for this post. 2005 loose ends: here we come.

There were several records I listened to a fair bit but didn't get a chance to write about, for one reason or another. Five of them stick in my mind:

the frames :: burn the maps

This came out in the UK in late 2004, but not in the US until early 2005 as far as I can tell. I have been listening to it all year, but it got lost in the frenzy of the early days of this blog. In a way, it's a cross between two forms of earnest indie rock: The Wedding Present and The Constantines. It's better than both records, and a few more; it enters at #17 in the final list.

The Frames :: Dream Awake (mp3)

kate bush :: aerial

Kate Bush's last album came out in 1993; the Lilith Fair started in 1996. If you find it hard to listen to her music given how Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, and the rest took a jackhammer to the path she paved, I understand. But she still sounds weirder and more legitimate than any of the rest on the 2-disc Aerial, although it's just a bit too wispy to make the top 20 (and it has a song in which she recites pi to way too many digits). If I judged records on how many purely astonishing moments they contain, it would be in the top 10.

Kate Bush :: How to be Invisible (mp3)

m83 :: before the dawn heals us

M83's first album was an indie cause célèbre; for some reason the duo's split diminished this subsequent release by one of the original pair. The songs sound more fully-realized and composed than those on Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts, and it is simply a more lasting album to my ears. It deserves a place in the top 20, but I can't find one for it.

M83 :: Teen Angst (mp3)

lightning bolt :: hypermagic mountain

This is the first Lightning Bolt record I've ever listened to. Based on descriptions, I expected patience-testing pure noise; instead, this is compelling energy music with an improvisational structure and a fair amount of musical theme. There are hints of prog-rock, metal, and free jazz all over the place. It's pretty damn listenable (if you're the adventurous sort), and another one that's tough to exclude from the top 20.

Lightning Bolt :: 2 Morro Morro Land (mp3)

the go! team :: thunder, lightning, strike

This came out in the UK in mid-2004, and I have been listening to it since then. It was mentioned plenty among the best records of '04. But it was released in the US in late 2005, and many folks are catching on. Nothing sounds quite like it, it's a rush all the way through, and it's not a bad thing that it's appearing in year-end roundups again.

The Go! Team :: Junior Kickstart (mp3)

Records that I have reviewed and have aged well through the year:

Gorillaz (I said I was calling it too early, and I was), Akron/Family (including the disc with Michael Gira's Angels of Light), Jaga Jazzist, The Decemberists, British Sea Power, Kanye West, Superwolf, Boards of Canada, Wolf Parade, Iron & Wine & Calexico (and Woman King EP), White Stripes, Michael Penn, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Stars, Black Mountain, Lou Barlow.

Also great ambient/experimental discs by Marsen Jules, Eluvium, and Nils Økland.

The disappointments? Spoon, first and foremost, despite one of the best songs of the year in "The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine". I expected a top 5 album after Kill the Moonlight and got a flawed non-masterpiece. It was still one of the 50 best discs of the year, despite the disappointment. In the major-league division, Bruce Springsteen turned in a near-total snooze.

The best live shows I saw all year were by LCD Soundsystem (the clear #1), Broken Social Scene, the triple bill of The Hold Steady, The Constantines, and Thunderbirds are Now!, and The Futureheads.

The best archival releases of the year were the Talking Heads brick, the Bill Fay reissues, the Band box set, the latest Bob Dylan compilation, the Judee Sill stuff, and the reissue of Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity.

Tomorrow, the top 20 wrap-up.

While this blog is in danger of becoming about my apologies for not finding the time to write, I will do my best to at least keep the new releases coming. And the year in music gets started this week with Bob Pollard's newest bloated effort, along with a soul-steeped Cat Power disc. Also, Clearlake, whose last record I thought was a real sleeper. And Värttinä, who are a pretty interesting Finnish vocal group. A Delta 5 retrospective is out for the art-punkers. East River Pipe sings about drugs. And finally, a weird covers record by Bonnie Prince Billy and Tortoise (what a combination).

Where have I been? Squirreled away analyzing the final 2005 tally. Waiting for new musical inspiration. Working on other projects. Studiously dissecting Ryan Adams' 29, released at the end of December, which is pretty much an open admission of failure and amounts to the kind of self-induced public humiliation only Mr. Adams knows how to conjure.

When I do tell you what I thought of 2005 in summary, one of the things I will say is this: perhaps the most remarkable release of all was the Talking Heads Brick - the complete set of albums remastered in DualDisc format for both regular audio and surround sound, with tons of extras. The stereo remasters sound incredible and have been too long in coming. The surround mixes are tastefully done, and the new dimension they add provides a reason to reconsider the band's catalog, which was more consistently brilliant than any but perhaps 5 or 10 other bands in history. In particular, Brian Eno's production touches get sent into the 2-dimensional sound field to great effect. Finally, the extras provide plenty of new treasures.

Why this in a new releases post? Rhino has just now begun issuing the albums individually, for those of you who want to avoid True Stories. The crucial first four this week:

Sorry for the lack of activity in these parts. I am in a bit of a strange zone of music listening; I have some box sets to catch up on and otherwise haven't listened to any new music that gets me excited enough to write (except for Kate Bush . . . I'll cover that soon). Do you need me to tell you that the Bob Dylan Bootleg Series v7 is absolutely essential? No; you either love him and you have it/are planning to get it, or more Dylan archival material is like a plate of lukewarm faeces to you.

I've also spent quite a bit of time with last year's Faces box set, which ends up proving that they were brilliant when inspired, but couldn't bottle enough of their supposedly fearsome live performances to make it essential to non-fanatics. Stick with their great album, A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse and a few tracks from the others.

You could look at it as a thematically organized collection of B-sides and find a few gems. You could also look to it for resolution: it becomes clear that the Black Sheep Boy was a kind of demon possessing the narrator, perhaps the one that gives him his songs ("there is no escaping the thing that is making its home in your radio"), and this is a kind of exorcism.

Perhaps simply due to its length, this disc doesn't have the wide-ranging scope of its parent, and in many ways it sticks to Okkervil's indie-folk core; it sounds not too different from a Bright Eyes disc in the process, with Will Sheff's vocal extensions and the swinging tempos.

Speaking of that, Bright Eyes seems to be a dual victim of the January curse and a sudden backlash - I haven't seen I'm Wide Awake It's Morning anywhere in year-end polls except mine, even though it was one of the 15 best-reviewed albums of the year.

In recent weeks, I've bought three nicely remastered deluxe issues of records that came out in 1975:

Bruce Springsteen :: Born to Run
Patti Smith :: Horses
Queen :: A Night at the Opera

As I think about the year-end top 20, it seems almost ridiculous that this year's crop belongs in the same kind of list as the above 3 records, absolute titans of their kind, and each a completely different take on the idea of rock music (though Horses is closer to Born to Run than some might think).

But those three are only the beginning. Take a look at the 1975 Pazz and Jop poll list:

1975 Village Voice Pazz and Jop Poll

My favorite Neil Young album and another great one. Blood on the Tracks. Red Headed Stranger. Physical Graffiti. 2 amazing Roxy Music records. Gary Stewart's Out of Hand, one of the best country records you've never heard.

Fer chrissakes. Am I just an old fogey (though not old enough to have been listening intelligently in '75), or do they just not make 'em like they used to? We're not even talking about '77 or '67/'68/'69 here.

It's an absolute crime, but not unexpected, that A Night at the Opera did not place in the above poll.
